First FIR registered under Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion Ordinance, 2020, in Bareli, UP.

Uttar Pradesh Police has registered the first case of Love Jihad after the promulgation of Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion Ordinance, 2020 in Bareli district. According to police, the FIR is registered under relevant sections against one Ubais for making unlawful conversion of a girl by deceit.

According to the police, accused Ubais had lured the girl into a relationship and then forced her into conversion. But, the girl refused and lodged the complaint. The accused was reported to be absconding.

UP Governor Anandiben Patel had promulgated the ordinance passed by UP Government. UP Cabinet had cleared the ordinance against unlawful religious conversion on November 24, 2020. However, the law doesn’t have the words Love Jihad mentioned in.  Now, the UP Assembly have to pass it in Vidhan Sabha within six months.

The law makes forced conversion punishable by jail term from a minimum of 1 year to a maximum of 10 years and a minimum penalty of Rs 10000 and a maximum penalty of Rs 50000 and the marriage will be pronounced null and void.
