The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhilai conducted a 5-Day All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) Training and Learning (ATAL) Academy sponsored online workshop on “Cyber Security in Smart Grids” from December 7 to 11. Around 200 participants across the country joined the workshop, which involved 14 technical sessions led by experts from academia and the industry. The lectures addressed three main arenas: cyber security, architecture of Smart Grids, and techniques to secure Smart Grids from cyber-attacks.

The workshop was inaugurated by Professor P D Srivastava, HOD Mathematics, IIT Bhilai, Professor Santosh Biswas, HOD Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, IIT Bhilai, and Dr Prashant Agnihotri, Asst Professor at IIT Bhilai. Professor Rajat Moona, Director of IIT Bhilai enlightened the participants with different concepts related to security goals and practical techniques to achieve them. Dr Ashok Kumar Das, IIIT Hyderabad, Dr Mayank Agarwal, IIT Patna, and Dr Santosh Biswas elaborated on the vulnerabilities that are present in Smart Grids and discussed schemes to mitigate them.

Experts from various industries, including Tektronix, RTDS, OPAL- RT, and Infineon Tech demonstrated the use of platforms like real time simulation of power systems, IoT, Block-chain etc. for provisioning security in Smart Grids from a hands-on perspective. The entire spectrum of Smart Grids, ranging from its introduction to the use of AI for improving the operations of Smart Grids, was also covered by eminent speakers from top institutes in India. Case studies on cyber-attacks and the mitigation techniques applied were also discussed during the workshop.  The virtual workshop was highly appreciated and received positive feedback from all the participants.
