All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) Nurses and Nursing Officers called off their indefinite strike on Tuesday night following a meeting with the AIIMS Administration and after the Delhi High Court’s order. Close to 5000 nurses had called on strike to protest the contract hiring and demands related to 6th pay commission on Monday afternoon.
There were 23 demands of the nurses. The most important one was regarding anomaly in sixth pay commission related to their salaries. They receive 17,140 monthly salaries whereas it is fixed at Rs 18,460 per month. Nurses had even written to the AIIMS Administration last month regarding the same demands and warned of going on an indefinite strike if their demands aren’t met.
The nurses also opposing the reservation system, which requires 80 per cent of nursing staff to be comprised of females, depriving much of the qualified male staff of employment.
Some of their other demands are regarding pension, cadre restructuring, qualification pay and modification in the job description and hiring of nurses on a contract basis. The High Court had said the Nurses couldn’t go on indefinite strike. AIIMS Delhi Director Dr Randeep Guleria
