Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly Speaker Dr Charandas Mahant will complete two years of his tenure on Monday, i.e.on January 4. Dr Mahant had been administered oath as the Speaker of the Assembly on January 4, 2019 after Congress came to power in the state.
On the eve of the completion of two years in the office, Dr Mahant expressed his feelings by reading few stanza of Sant Kabir Das Ji. Dr Mahant said, “Kabira Khada Bazaar Mein, Mange Sabki Kher, Na Kahu Se Dosti, Na Kahu Se Bair” (Kabira stands for welfare of one and all).
Dr Mahant said, “We are committed to take care of the dignity of the House and all those values. This is not possible without the cooperation of the members. Let us go with the aim of well-being. We may have differences of opinion during the proceedings of the House, but there should not be any discrimination.”
A two-day special session of the “Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly” was held on October 2 and 3, 2019, on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, a symbol of truth, non-violence and humanity. On the occasion of this special session, an exhibition, drama and lecture series depicting Gandhiji’s philosophy were organised. Chhattisgarh became the first state to organize such special session in the country. Khadi and Kosa apparel were supplied to the members and Members of Parliament of Chhattisgarh state, Dr Mahant said in his message.
For the first time, the oath of newly elected members of the Fifth Legislative Assembly and the special session proceedings held on the occasion of Gandhiji’s 150th birth anniversary which was telecast live on Doordarshan.
For the first time, 28 members of the House took oath in Chhattisgarhi language. Dr Mahanta allowed women members only to participate in the discussion on women and child development during February session in 2019. National song “Vande Mataram” along with the state song “Arpa Pairi ke Dhar” was sung on November 25, 2019. A special discussion was held in the assembly on November 26, 2019 on the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of India. “Chhattisgarhi Official Language Day” on November 28, Dr Mahant conducted the proceedings of the session in Chhattisgarhi language.
Dr Mahant, on August 29, 2020, performed Bhoomi Pujan was for construction of new Vidhan Sabha building in Sector-19, Nava Raipur.

The adherence to social distancing through glass-partitioning in the Legislative Assembly during the Kovid-19 transition was certainly commendable and exemplary.
