Raipur Police have arrested a Nigerian national who allegedly duped several women across the country by befriending them online.
The sleuths of Cyber Cell arrested a Nigerian national identified as Ignatius C Nouruka (35) for allegedly duping a woman of Raipur to the tune of around Rs 5 lakh on the pretext of sending expensive gift, said Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Lakhan Patle.
The accused was arrested from Delhi and brought here on transit remand, added the ASP.
From his possession, police have recovered four mobile handsets, one laptop, debit card, driving license, passport, PAN Card and a pen drive, added the ASP.
ASP Patle informed that the accused trap women by creating bogus ID on Facebook and somehow managed to get their mobile numbers with their impressive communication skill during the chat. The accused Nigerian dupe women on the pretext of sending an expensive gift and on the excuse of fulfilling formalities like custom clearance, money conversion, income tax, account upgrade and other required for claiming the gift.
ASP Patle further informed that recently, the accused had duped a woman to the tune of around Rs 5 lakh after befriending her on Facebook by introducing himself as Dr Ronald Christopher. Acting swiftly, a team was constituted to probe the case. Based on the technical analysis of the modus-operandi of the crime and Facebook ID as well as mobile number used in the crime, investigators suspect the involvement of Nigerian gang in the crime following which a team was dispatched to Delhi and the accused was arrested.
In this connection, an offence was registered with Rajendra Nagar police station under Section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of Indian penal Code (IPC) and under relevant Section of Information Technology (IT) Act.
