Pune Police booked Newslaundry columnist Sharjeel Usmani for hate speech against Hindus.

Pune Police on Tuesday has registered an offence against web-portal Newslaundry columnist Sharjeel Usmani for delivering a hate speech against Hindus and promoting enmity between different groups at an event organized by Elgar Parishad.

The case was registered after a wide-spread anger amongst Hindu community and on the complaint of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pradip Gavade under Section 153 (A) of Indian Penal Code i.e. to promote enmity between different groups of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language etc and doing act prejudicial to maintenance of harmony.

BJP leader Gavade said they requested the police to register a case against Usmani under Section 124-A as Usmani allegedly stated that he doesn’t believe in Indian state, Parliament and judiciary. Gavade also requested for registering an offence against the organizers at Elgar Parishad.
