Court sentences doctor for negligence causing death

A local court in Raipur has convicted a 70-year-old doctor for negligence causing death of a patient and sentenced her to one year imprisonment.

According to information received, the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Satyanand Prasad has found Dr Shakun Bagdi (70), doctor of Bagdi Nursing Home at Budhapara under Kotwali police station limits, guilty for negligence resulting in death of a patient in November 2007 during treatment. Besides, the court has imposed Rs 10000 as fine on Dr Bagdi.
In case of default in paying the fine, the convict has to undergo imprisonment for the period of two months, added sources in the court.

It may be recalled that on 13 November 2007, a pregnant woman identified as Mousam Shrivastava was admitted in Bagdi Nursing Home for delivery and died during the treatment. Accusing the doctor of administering expired injection as cause of the death, Mousam’s relatives lodged a complaint against Dr Badgi in Kotwali police station. Based on the investigation and allegation of the deceased’s relatives, police registered an offence against Dr Bagdi under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of Indian Penal Code (IPC).
