Raipur, Feb 10
Once upon a time, an incident shook Raipur and any story of student politics will remain incomplete without mentioning about the incident. It has been 39 years, yet it’s still afresh in people’s memory.
In 1982, Ayurvedic College students were demanding the same stipend on par with the medical college students. At the time, Ayurvedic College’s students’ union president was Ashok Sharma. Agitating students were jailed. A delegation of students from different colleges had reached Jail to release the locked students.
The delegation was comprised of Sheshnarayan Shukla, Brijmohan Agrawal, Satish Jain, Patanjali Diwan, Fazlur Rehman, and Vinod Adil had entered jail premises to hold talks with the authorities. Mohammad Akbar and some other student leaders reached late, but they were holding on outside the jail premises. Groups of students were roaming in the city even as the police had erected checkpoints at several spots to maintain law & order situation. Some student leaders had disappeared after seeing the strictness of police.
On the other side, the delegation was in intense discussion with the Jailor, who proposed filing a bond for in lieu of releasing the students. But the situation suddenly turned even more flammable when the hand of a student unknowingly touched the gun of a jail constable. Jail Administration mistook it for student’s attempt at snatching gun. Alarm whistle was blown and jail personnel thrashed the students of delegation. A total of 62 students were locked for 11 days.
At the time, Raipur Collector was Najeeb Jung. Citizens were fuming with anger over the incident and the then MP Keyur Bhushan had intervened to douse the combustible situation and released the students without any pre-condition. Sheshnarayan Shukla was the president of the University Students’ Union. Brijmohan Agrawal, Mohammad Akbar, Satish Jain, Fazlur Rehman, Vinod Adil, Anil Pusadkar were busy politicking in their respective colleges. Out of them, Brijmohan Agrawal became a BJP leader and presently he is Raipur South MLA. He remained Minister in Madhya Pradesh and newly formed Chhattisgarh Government. Mohammad Akbar turned Congress leader and he too served as a Minister in MP and Chhattisgarh Governments. Presently, he is Kawardha MLA and Minister in Bhupesh Government cabinet.
