As many as 47 people died after an over-speeding bus plunged into a 20-feet-deep Bansagar canal at village Piprav in Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday. The prima-facie evidence suggests the 32-seater Sidhi-Satna bus was carrying 60 people and the driver was speeding along recklessly.

According to the reports, the bus was owned by a private agency. Seven people were rescued while five others went missing, which might add to the overall tally of casualties, which include 24 men, 21 women and two kids. Almost half of them were young, age from 20 to 30-years going to appear for a government recruitment examination. The bus driver took a short-cut route after the job aspirants requested him to speed up as they were getting late for the exam.

Prime Minister announced Rs 2 lakhs for kin of each victim. The survivors were admitted to a hospital in Rewa.
