Bharatiya Janata Party Candidates on Monday unopposed secured both Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat. The seats had become vacant after the demises of Congress MP Ahmed Patel and BJP MP Abhay Ganpatray Bhardwaj.
BJP Candidates Dinesh Anavadiya and Ram Mokariya won the by-polls conducted on the two vacant seats. Dinesh Anavadiya is the state BJP Other Backward Caste (OBC) Morcha President. He is a veteran leader from Banaskantha district and has served as the Director at the Gujarat State Road Transport between 2014-17. Mokariya is a steadfast BJP leader for over four decades.
The two BJP candidates won unopposed as no Congress candidate filed nomination for the Rajya Sabha seats. Notably, Ahmed Patel, who passed away on November 25, 2020, was elected to the Upper House on five occasions from Gujarat. This is the first time the BJP has won the seat earlier held by Ahmed Patel.
