Madhwin Kamath from Gujarat emerged as Singles champion of Gondwana Cup All India Tennis Tournament (2.5 lakh prize money) organised in Raipur from February 22 to 26. Kamath defeated Lohit Akash Badrinath from Tamil Nadu by 6-2, 7-6 (6) in the final played at Union Club on Friday. In Doubles final, pair of Parikshit Somani (Assam) and Paras Dahiya (Haryana) defeated Lakshit and Chandril Sood (Punjab) by 7-6(7), 6-4 to lift the trophy.
Sharing his views, Kamath said that Gondwana Cup is a major title to win. “I was India number one in the U-16 and National Champion followed Asian Junior Bronze medalists and U-18 India Number One. I was national champions in both Singles and Doubles in the age group of U-18,” Kamath told this newspaper. Current All India Ranking of Kamath is 113.
Badrinath said that he was unable to deal properly with heavy forehand shots of Kamath. “I was not 100 per cent in my game. Kamath played well. It was a big tournament for me,” said Badrinath.
Chhattisgarh State Tennis Association (CSTA) general secretary Gurucharan Singh Hora was the chief guest of the prize distribution function. CSTA executive president Avtar Juneja, treasurer Lawrence Santiago, Raipur Olympic Association president Dr Atul Shukla, tournament coordinator Rupendra Singh Chouhan, White Badge Referee Pravin Nayak and Sakshi Chug were also present on the occasion.
