Opposition creates ruckus in Assembly over alleged suicide/murder of a Jan Chetna Natya Mandali female member in police custody

The main opposition BJP raised the issue of alleged suicide/murder of a Jan Chetna Natya Mandali female member in police custody was raised in the Assembly on Tuesday. The BJP legislators led by Legislators led by Leader of Opposition Dharamlal Kaushik raised the issue by moving Adjournment Motion Notice and demanded immediate discussion on it. They demanded the government must clear its stand on it.

MLA Devvrat Singh, who was on the Chair, said the Adjournment Motion notice was received on Tuesday at 9am and therefore it is under consideration. This led to ruckus in the House as BJP Legislators kept on demanding government’s stand on the issue and subsequent discussion on the same. Due to the pandemonium the Chair suspended the House proceedings for five minutes. Later when the proceedings resumed again, the issue was raised again by the BJP Legislators, but Satyanarayan Sharma who was on the Chair then, asked the BJP Legislators to have patience since the matter is under consideration. Thereafter the House moved ahead on the day’s business.

Soon after the Question Hour, BJP Legislator Shivratan Sharma raised the issue along with Ajay Chandrakar, Narayan Chandel, Saurabh Singh, Dharmalal Kaushik amongst others. They alleged that police has claimed that Kumari Pande Kawasi, a female member of Jan Chetna Natya Mandali had committed suicide in Shantikunj, meant of surrendered Maoists, under Karli Police Lines in Dantewada district. They further alleged that these claims had been countered by the parents of Kumari Pande Kawasi that neither their daughter was a Maoist nor she had surrendered before the police. On the contrary, some police personnel had reached their village Gudsa and had forcibly taken some people along with their daughter from the village and later they had come to know from the people that their daughter was made to surrender as a Maoist.

The BJP Legislators said the parents of Kumari Pande Kawasi had further alleged that they along with the village Sarpanch and few family members had gone to meet her at Shantikunj, but were not allowed to meet and were made to wait at the gate all day. Later in the evening they were informed late evening that their daughter had committed suicide.

The BJP Legislators further alleged that in the name of Police Lon Varratu campaign, the government is carrying out an illusion of surrendering Maoists and earning goodwill. They alleged that along with Kumari Pande Kawasi, five other persons were also taken by the police personnel, who’re branded as Maoists carrying rewards on their heads and were made to surrender. The eye witnesses who had seen the body of Kumari Pandey were of the opinion that the telltale marks and signs which denote suicide were missing from the body and that this is an act of murder. On the other hand the Superintendent of Police had claimed that Kumari Pandey herself was not ready to return to her house as she was being forcibly married and that she had committed suicide.

The BJP Legislative Party Leader Dharamlal Kaushik alleged on the basis of claims made by tribal leaders of the region and local people that this is not suicide and that she was murdered and then hanged. Hence immediate discussions should be carried out in this issue where a tribal girl has lost her life and the state government should table its stand upon it at the earliest. However, the Chair asked the BJP Legislators to have patience and the motion is under consideration.
