Chhattisgarh stands 10th in the country as far as list of states reported highest number of rape cases while the state stands 7th in kidnapping cases, said Home Minister Tamradhwaj Sahu in reply to a question asked by Leader of Opposition Dharamlal Kaushik during Question Hour of the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
Kaushik asked if the Home Minister will disclose the number of molestation and gang rape cases occurred in the state from January 1, 2019 to February 4, 2021. Kaushik also asked about the ratio of rape and kidnapping cases in every one lakh population of the state.
In reply, the Home Minister said that a total of 2485 rape cases were reported in Chhattisgarh in the year 2019 with Raipur district reporting the highest 282 cases, Raigarh stood second with 200 cases and Surguja stood 144 cases. Similarly, a total of 61 gang rape cases were reported in the year with Jashpur district reporting the highest 7 cases, Baloda Bazaar district reporting six cases, Balrampur, Surajpur and Raipur reporting 5 cases each. A total of 1910 molestation cases were reported in the year with Raipur topping with 218 cases followed by Durg 211 cases and Bilaspur reporting 196 cases. As many as 21 attempt to murder cases were registered and 251 cases of eve-teasing were reported in the year 2019.
The number of rape cases in the state increased in the year 2020. A total of 2553 cases were registered with Raipur district witnessing the highest 262 cases followed by Raigarh 176 and Balrampur district reporting 162 cases. Durg district contributed the highest 7 cases to the total 51 gang rape cases reported in the state in the year 2020. Balrampur and Janjgir stood second and third respectively with five and fours cases in the year. A total of 1878 molestation cases were reported in the year with Raipur (185 cases) and Durg district (182) standing first and second respectively. A total of 288 eve-teasing cases were reported in the year 2020 and 26 attempt to rape cases were registered.
Furnishing the data of four months from January 1 to February 4, 2021, the Home Minister informed the House that 247 rape cases were registered during the period with Durg reporting the highest 22 cases and Bilaspur standing second with 20 cases. Surajpur district stands third with 19 cases and Balrampur stands third with 18 cases. As many as ten gang rape cases were reported till February 4 this year with Jashpur reporting the highest five cases. A total of 165 molestation cases were reported till February 4 this year.
