Fast Track Special Court sentences man to 20 years RI

A Fast Track Special Court in Raipur on Monday sentenced a youth to 20 years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) for exploiting a minor girl sexually.

The court of Additional district and Sessions Judge (I Fast Track Special Court) Rajeev Kumar has convicted Umashankar alias Om, hailing from Mahasamund district, guilty of raping a 14-year-old girl and awarded him 20 years RI, said Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Morisha Naidu.

Besides, the court has imposed Rs 56500 as fine on the convict, added SPP Naidu.

SPP Naidu further elaborated that the court has awarded 20 years RI to the convict and Rs 50000 as fine under Section 376(3) (persons committing offence of rape on a woman under sixteen years of age) of Indian Penal Code (IPC), 10 years RI and Rs 5000 fine under Section 376(2)(n) (commits rape repeatedly on the same woman), three years RI and Rs 1000 as fine under Section 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage, etc) and two years RI and Rs 500 as fine under Section 363 (punishment for kidnapping) of IPC.

Notably, in May 2018, Umashankar abducted the minor girl and exploited her sexually on the pretext of marriage. After the minor girl was recovered and based on her statement, Mandir Hasaud police booked Umashankar under relevant Sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
