Raipur, May 4
Two persons were arrested for allegedly smuggling diamonds worth Rs 50 lakh in Gariyaband district of Chhattisgarh, police said on Tuesday.
As many as 440 pieces of rough diamonds were seized from the arrested duo, added police.
Acting on a precise tip-off, the accused identified as Subhash Mandal (43) and Ujjwal Chandrakar (30), both residents of Raipur, were apprehended at Borid area under Fingeshwar police station limits, said Gariaband Superintendent of Police (SP) Bhojram Patel.
The SP further informed that based on precise input about two persons along with precious stones were heading towards Raipur on Chura-Fingeshwar Road, a police team led by Fingeshwar Station House Officer (SHO) Sub Inspector Bhushan Chandrakar swung into action and intercepted the duo. Police have seized 440 pieces of rough diamonds worth Rs 50 lakh.
In this connection, police have registered an offence against the duo under Sections 379 (theft), 34 (common intention) and Section 4(21) of Mining Act and probing the matter further.
