Continuing its crackdown against wildlife offenders and smuggling of animals’ body parts, a Special Task Force (STF) of Crime Branch in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district arrested a man along with scales of pangolin.

The accused identified as Suren Purty was arrested near village Balichua under Sarat police station in the district on Friday, said police sources, adding “from the possession of arrested man, the team received around 4.820 kilograms of pangolin scales and other materials.”

“Following a tip-off about a man possessing pangolin scales, the sleuths of STF along with forest personnel conducted a raid resulting in the arrest of Purty along with scales,” said police sources.

The arrested accused was handed over to the forest department and a probe was launched to gather more inputs about the smuggling network as well as source of procurement, added police sources.
